Vintage Kokeshi by Miyama Keiji. Miyama Keiji worked primarily in Gunma Prefecture, the absolute center of the Sosaku (creative) kokeshi movement in Japan. Unlike the strictly traditional Dento kokeshi from Tohoku, the Sosaku style offered artists complete freedom after World War II to experiment with shapes, engravings, and modern designs. Active Period: His most productive flourishing period was in the Showa era, particularly the 1970s and 1980s. Recognition & Awards: He is highly regarded within the Japanese woodcarver community. During his career, he won several prestigious national awards, including the highly honorable Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award.
The doll has a strikingly large, bulbous head with a deep black, glossy bob hairstyle (okappa) that reaches to the cheeks. On top of the head sits a contrasting, bright red wooden bow that functions as a hair accessory. The little face is rendered in a minimalist and serene manner on the light, natural wood. It has two delicate, downward-curved black eyes and a subtle, small red mouth that smiles softly. The cylindrical body is painted dark green to black. Large, fiery red camellias (Tsubaki) with green leaves and yellow details have been hand-engraved and painted onto it. The flowers flow elegantly around the body.

NB: The kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and cracks present to a greater or lesser extent.
