Vintage Kokeshi by Masae Fujikawa (1942–2015). This beautiful Japanese Kokeshi doll is a wonderful example of traditional woodworking. The figurine has a sweet face with delicate, dreamy eyes and a subtle smile. The detailed flowers on the red kimono are hand-carved into the wood, giving the doll a tactile and elegant relief. Masae Fujikawa (1942–2015) was a prominent Japanese kokeshi-shi (kokeshi artist) from Gunma Prefecture. He is widely recognized as one of the early masters of the Sōsaku (creative) Kokeshi movement. The doll in the image is a beautiful and recognizable example of his distinctive style. Biography and career. Early start: Fujikawa was born in Gunma Prefecture and began making kokeshi dolls at the age of 17 (in 1959). Training: He apprenticed with the renowned master Ishida Kanji. Own studio: In 1991, he founded the Fujikawa Craft Corporation, a family business later joined by his brothers Kazumi and Eiichi. Recognition: During his lifetime, he won numerous prestigious awards. His greatest achievement was twice winning the Prime Minister’s Award (in 1996 and 2002), the highest artistic distinction in the kokeshi world. The height is 15 cm, for the condition please see the photos. Please note: kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discolorations, and cracks to a greater or lesser extent.
