Vintage Hijiori kokeshi by Shoichi Sato from 1995. Shoichi Sato was born on November 10, 1935, as the eldest son of woodworkers Sato Minosuke and Kikuno, in Kitazaimokucho 181, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Around 1973, he actively began working with kokeshi dolls and dedicated himself to the challenge of restoring many Shusuke dolls. He received the Medal for Excellent Skills from the prefecture and the country (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare), and was awarded the Yellow Ribbon Medal in 2000 and the Pola Prize for Traditional Culture in 2007. A Hijiori kokeshi (Hijiori-kei) is a traditional Japanese wooden kokeshi doll that originates from Hijiori Onsen, a mountainous hot spring area (onsen) in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. This style emerged during the Meiji period as a fusion of two other well-known traditional kokeshi styles: the Naruko style and the Togatta style. The dolls often have broad shoulders, a straight body, and a thick base. From the 1950s onwards, the doll's body is traditionally often painted bright yellow (kichiya), with hand-painted patterns of chrysanthemums (kiku) or carnations (dianthus) on it. The head is often large and stable, with characteristic details such as moon-shaped eyes, fine eyebrows, and small red lips. A bun or hair ornament is often drawn on top of the head. Because they are made in a remote mountainous area and generally fewer examples are produced than of larger main styles, Hijiori kokeshi are very popular and beloved among collectors. The height is 24 cm, for the condition please view the photos. Please note: kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discolorations and/or cracks to a greater or lesser extent.
