Product description
Modernist signed lithograph by Swedish auction artist Gösta Werner (1909-1989). The artist’s work from 1972. Handwritten lithograph signed and dated by the author in the lower part of the painting. The lithograph comes from the Stockholm gallery of the famous Swedish art dealer Ragnar Zedell as evidenced by the export label on the back of the work. Preserved in very good condition. Framed. Gustaf (Gösta) Werner, born May 30, 1909 in Stockholm, died November 13, 1989, was a Swedish painter, illustrator, graphic artist and sculptor. After graduating from high school, Werner went to sea. He deepened his education and became a captain in 1935. After World War II, he became a full-time artist. He studied with Isaac Grünewald 1944–1947 and Académie Libre in Stockholm in 1947–1948 and with André Lhote in Paris in 1949. He received a Royal Foundation scholarship in 1953 and 1963, a cultural scholarship from the County of Västernorrland in 1964 and a scholarship from the City of Stockholm in 1965. First, Werner painted clearly realistic still lifes, nudes and landscapes in the colors he learned from Lhote, then he switched to more non-figurative painting. In the early 1960s, he was a member of the spontaneous Aktiv Färg group. From the mid-1960s, his art was figuratively modernist maritime painting. It was common in Werner’s painting that he incorporated text into the image (for example, the names of ships or destination ports). As a graphic artist he dealt with linoleum cutting and lithography, and as a draftsman he participated in drawings in the Vintergatan annual and Horisont magazine. He has exhibited separately at De ungas salong, Gummesons konsthall and Galerie Pierre in Stockholm, as well as at Sundsvall, Stockviksverken, Lund, Örnsköldsvik and at the Galerie du Haut Pavé in Paris. He exhibited with his brother in Norrköping in 1951, with Sven Alfons and Erik Karlsson in Visby in 1953, and with Maja Arnell and Leoo Verde in Skövde. He took part in several group exhibitions at Galerie Iris Clert in Paris in 1958-1962, the group Active Color exhibition at Galerie Blanche, Stockholm Salons Liljevalch exhibitions, Swedish General Art Association exhibitions in Stockholm and group exhibitions in Dortmund, Zurich and London. The Göst Werner and the Sea Museum is located in Simrishamn nad Österlen, and it is also represented at the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museum in Stockholm, Kalmar Art Museum, Norrköping Art Museum, Dalarna Museum and Lund University Art Museum.
