Vintage signed understated kokeshi. This special kokeshi radiates pure simplicity through its minimalist design. The face and posture are kept extremely modest, without unnecessary embellishment or bright colors. The serene, minimalist gaze conveys a serene innocence that captures the essence of this modern, creative kokeshi.This is a sōsaku kokeshi: a modern and free interpretation of the traditional Japanese wooden doll.While traditional kokeshis (dentō kokeshi) are strictly bound by fixed regional rules, forms, and specific paintings from Northern Japan, the creative movement emerged in the 20th century to give artists complete freedom.The maker is not limited by traditional styles and experiments extensively with unique forms, asymmetry, modern silhouettes, and various types of wood. Instead of standard floral motifs, creative kokeshi dolls often feature subdued, calm, or poetic facial expressions that convey universal themes such as tranquility, simplicity, or human emotion.Because they are genuine works of art by individual makers, artists almost always sign their work on the bottom with a Hanko seal.The height is 17 cm; please view the photos for the condition.Please note: the kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and small tears present to a greater or lesser extent.
