Fantastic vintage armchair model ‘FB14’, designed by Cees Braakman and produced by Pastoe in the 1950s. This armchair is part of Braakman’s birch series, in which the use of birch wood and bent plywood takes center stage. At the time, this was a progressive and innovative production technique!
This particular piece originates from Friesland and has been used almost daily with much love and pleasure since the 1950s. It became available due to the clearing out of the home.
Given its condition upon arrival, it was decided to fully and carefully restore the armchair, naturally with respect for the original design. The frame has been refinished, deliberately preserving the characteristic patina. As a result, the whole piece looks fresh again, without losing its character. The solid birch wood gives the chair a light, almost optimistic appearance. Something that was particularly innovative for furniture design during that period. The seat and backrest feature new foam and have been reupholstered in a coarse wool fabric by dePloeg, named Andes. The fabric is predominantly beige, with subtle undertones of dark brown, and closely matches the original upholstery in terms of appearance and material. A successful restoration that does justice to the original design. The light fabric combines beautifully with the birch wood and enhances the armchair's fresh, airy appearance.
The proportions, lines, and design are balanced down to the last detail; a design where everything is just right. Playful and elegant at the same time, with seating comfort that is fully restored thanks to the restoration. A beautiful example of progressive Dutch design that we can rightly be proud of.
