A “Velella” ceiling lamp designed by the Castiglioni Brothers for Flos in the 1960s, a project inspired by nature and its ability to suggest forms that are both simple and unexpected. Its name refers to the Velella velella, a small marine organism whose soft and lightweight profile was translated by the designers into an object of immediate recognisability.
The white opaline glass diffuser is shaped as a continuous, enveloping volume, hollowed at its centre to create an opening that lightens the lamp's presence and defines its sculptural character. The purity of its surface and the absence of decorative elements place the emphasis entirely on the relationship between solids and voids, turning light itself into an integral part of the form.
When switched off, it stands out for the balance of its proportions and its understated elegance; once illuminated, it provides a soft and even glow, enhanced by the combination of the central bulb and the internal circular light source. An emblematic example of the Castiglioni Brothers' approach, where experimentation, irony and formal clarity coexist effortlessly.
