Val Saint Lambert “Louise” Covered Crystal Powder Jar Belgium, early 20th century – documented in the factory catalogues and again in the 1926 Articles de Toilette catalogue A beautiful hand-cut overlay crystal powder jar from Val Saint Lambert’s elegant Louise toilet service, executed in rich cobalt blue crystal with a clear cut overlay. The decorative cutting, designed by Hubert Fouarge, combines finely engraved diamond motifs with stylized fan-shaped leaves, while the lid is crowned by a striking starburst cut framed by polished thumb-cut detailing around the rim. This model appears in the Val Saint Lambert catalogues of the early 20th century and was later reissued in the 1926 Articles de Toilette catalogue, confirming its enduring popularity and timeless design. Originally intended as a powder jar for an elegant dressing table, it reflects the exceptional craftsmanship for which the Belgian crystal manufacturer became internationally renowned. Today, this versatile piece works equally well as a decorative accent, a jewellery or trinket box, or can still be used for its original purpose as a powder container. The deep cobalt overlay beautifully contrasts with the brilliant clear cut crystal, creating remarkable depth and sparkle as it catches the light. The jar remains in very good antique condition, with only a couple of tiny chips, visible in the photographs, and otherwise presents beautifully. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks. The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp.
