Product description
Val Saint Lambert “Louise” Carafe Set Belgium, circa 1908–1926 Designed by Hubert Fouarge An elegant and highly collectible crystal bedside water carafe by the renowned Belgian crystal manufactory Val Saint Lambert, executed in richly coloured cobalt blue overlay crystal with the celebrated Louise cut, designed by the distinguished master engraver Hubert Fouarge. The Louise pattern is one of Val Saint Lambert’s finest early 20th-century hand-cut designs, distinguished by its refined combination of diamond lattice engraving and stylised palm motifs. Every facet was meticulously cut by hand, creating brilliant reflections that beautifully contrast with the deep cobalt overlay. Unlike a traditional table decanter intended for serving several guests, this model was conceived as a personal bedside or dressing-table water set. The accompanying tumbler fits neatly over the neck of the carafe, protecting the drinking glass from dust while creating an elegant sculptural silhouette. A single person could simply lift the glass, pour fresh water, enjoy a drink during the night, and replace the tumbler on top of the decanter—a practical yet luxurious detail typical of refined European interiors at the beginning of the twentieth century. Originally produced as part of the Louise toilet service, this model appears in both the 1908 and 1926 Val Saint Lambert catalogues, providing excellent documented confirmation of its authenticity and long production history. Crafted from heavy lead crystal with an intense cobalt blue overlay and entirely hand-cut decoration, the set perfectly illustrates the extraordinary level of craftsmanship for which Val Saint Lambert became internationally renowned. The set remains in very good antique condition, with no chips. An exceptionally decorative and functional piece that today serves equally well as a bedside water service, an elegant bar accessory, or a striking display object for collectors of fine European crystal. Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks. The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp. The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics. Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation. Will be well packaged and protected
