Val Saint Lambert Bonbonnière, Pattern 3247/17 by Hubert Fouarge
Belgium, early 1900s
An exceptional antique bonbonnière by Val Saint Lambert, crafted in the early 20th century and featuring the well-documented cut pattern 3247/17, designed by Hubert Fouarge.
Executed in rich cobalt blue overlaid crystal, this piece beautifully showcases the refined technique of double-layered crystal (overlay glass), where the deep blue exterior is expertly cut to reveal the clear crystal beneath. The result is a striking contrast that highlights the precision and brilliance of the hand-cut decoration.
The geometric and starburst motifs are characteristic of Val Saint Lambert’s finest production, combining technical mastery with timeless elegance. The lid is equally refined, adorned with a radiant cut star pattern that completes the composition.
This is a rare model, seldom encountered on the market, especially in such well-preserved condition. For an object over 100 years old, it remains in excellent condition, with only minimal signs of age.
A superb collector’s piece — equally suited as a refined decorative object, a jewelry box, or an elegant bonbonnière for a sophisticated table setting.
Antique cut crystal of this quality and origin continues to grow in desirability, making this piece not only beautiful but also a meaningful addition to any serious collection.
Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks.
The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp.
The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics.
Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation.
