About Schlossberg
The company was founded by Theodore and Ilse Stephan in Langenaubach in 1946. It was a relatively small but very successful enterprise, especially during the 1950s. Like other companies, it switched to producing popular lava glaze designs in the mid-1960s. Designer Liesel Spornhauer was employed for a short period until 1959, after leaving Dümler & Breiden in the early 1950s. In 1962, she and Bodo Mans formed a group of artists and designers called "Muffel." Besides creating paintings and sculptures, the group was also involved in ceramic design, attempting to combine the beautiful colors of various glazes with a new approach to surface structure and glaze composition. They must have been inspired by their work at various West German ceramic factories, and their work later influenced that of these companies.
After Liesel's departure, Ilse Stephan became the main designer. Hans Welling, who had also worked for Ruscha and Ceramano, joined Schlossberg.
