Two authentic, hand-colored ornithological lithographs, printed in Brussels by Lith. de Burggraaff of Brussels and published by Th. Lejeune éditeur, dating from the early period of Belgian lithography (circa 1828–1833).
Both works are demonstrably part of the same natural history series, as confirmed by the original plate numbers Pl. 1 and Pl. 19.
The first plate shows La Gélinote and Le Petit Tétras; the second, Le Grand Aigle and Le Balbazar.
The drawings are among the earliest Brussels natural history publications that combined lithography and hand-coloring. The hand-coloring is fine, transparent, and completely original, retaining detail and color intensity.
Both prints are in exceptionally good condition for their age: the paper shows natural, even discoloration but no tears, absolutely minimal foxing, or moisture marks. The margins are intact, and the print quality is sharp. The works are professionally framed by De Witte Leeuw (Antwerp) in neutral, conservative frames that respect their historical value.
This duo forms a coherent and rare entity within the Brussels natural history print production of the early 19th century, both due to their shared provenance and thematic and stylistic coherence.
A beautiful, powerful aesthetic pair!
