A rare pair of sculptural vases in solid glass, designed by Timo Sarpaneva for Iittala, model Jääpuikko (“Here”), produced in Finland between 1958 and 1966. These iconic pieces of post-war Finnish design feature an extremely refined conical silhouette, combined with a subtle gradient of deep blue embedded in a substantial mass of clear crystal. The elongated, minimalist form evokes an ice stalactite, a recurring theme in Sarpaneva's organic work of the late 1950s. They possess a striking decorative and sculptural presence, particularly the larger 41 cm model, which is now sought after by collectors of Scandinavian glass and modernist design.
Both pieces are signed with a stylus on the base:
“Timo Sarpaneva – Iittala”.
