Three stunning pieces of tagua nut jewelry: two for the neck and one for the wrist.
Tagua jewelry is made from the nuts of the tagua palm tree, which grows in the South American rainforest. The tagua nut is unique because its white-yellow flesh hardens like ivory when dried. Because the nut's white color changes to an ivory-yellow, it is also called "vegetable ivory." Buttons were once made from the nuts for high-quality clothing, but once buttons were artificially made, this market collapsed. However, a promising opportunity opened up when it was discovered that tagua nuts were suitable for producing exceptionally beautiful jewelry. For jewelry production, the nuts are not used in their natural form, but are cut into slices or (most often) into cylindrical plates. When they are not used in their natural ivory color, they are dyed in an environmentally friendly way. Each piece is handcrafted with the utmost care. The tagua nut harvest is a new source of income for the inhabitants of the Colombian rainforest. It makes these people less dependent on large landowners and offers an alternative to coca and cocaine cultivation. Therefore, the tagua palm tree is no longer being cleared as a useless plant to make way for more lucrative coca plantations. This new use for the tagua nut therefore contributes to the conservation of the tropical rainforest.
The three jewels are all new.
P.S.: The dimensions I've entered here are the slices of the first jewel.
