Arts: Arts, Th.J. Arts, Theodorus Arts, Dorus Arts was born May 25, 1901 in Hernen and died April 8, 1961 in Montreal. Education: largely self-taught, Department of Drawing at the Craft School in Nijmegen 1916, M.O. drawing course with Van Hooijdonk in Nijmegen, learned etching from Jan van Vucht-Thijssen who lived in Neerbosch (according to other sources from his later bosom friend Antoon Heijmans); lessons from the painters Jurres and Koos Stikvoort (ca. 1915?) Period in the region: Nijmegen 1930, Beek-Ubbergen 1937-1939; Groesbeek (?) or Heilig Landstichting 1939-1955 Exhibitions in the region: Waaggebouw Nijmegen 1929, Lunchroom Keizer Karel Nijmegen 1929, De Waag Nijmegen 1931, Belvoir Nijmegen 1932 (group), De Waag Nijmegen 1933, Belvoir Nijmegen 1934, Openbare Leeszaal Nijmegen 1936, De Waag Nijmegen 1937, Kunsthandel Nickel Nijmegen 1938, Galerie Pollmann Nijmegen 1941 (trio), De Waag Nijmegen 1949, Afscheidsexpositie in eigen atelier 1955 (solo), Commanderie Nijmegen 1971 (solo), Kasteel Wijchen 2000 (solo) Residence: Nijmegen, Beek-Ubbergen, Heilig Landstichting Genre and technique: Proficient in drawing, painting and etching: besides oil paintings (mainly on board) and etchings also murals, watercolors, pen drawings and pastels; mainly landscapes in the style of the Haagse School, city views and fens often with twilight or moonlight; as a result of observations in nature the works were only created in the studio and they are therefore rarely photographic representations of places; in addition also still lifes, bible pieces, Stations of the Cross for the chapel of Sancta Maria, now church Dennenstraat Nijmegen and portraits of bishops o.Illustrated, together with his wife (the teacher Mien Mijling, whom he met at Antoon Heijmans where she took drawing lessons) stories in De Gelderlander, for books and magazines Characterization: "Especially the sadness and melancholy of autumn and winter were a way for Arts to express his own moods (...) a silent, modest but very driven man. He was someone who was often weighed down by the endless worries for his family in the time of crisis and war. In his Nijmegen period he was always seeking recognition as an artist." (in: Dorus Arts / 1999) Theodorus Johannes Arts was born on May 25, 1901 in Bergharen (Gelderland). Lived and worked in Nijmegen until 1939, Groesbeek 1939-1955, left May 18, 1955 for Canada. Painter and draughtsman of landscapes in the Hague School style. Taught J.Schouten and P.H.A.Vermeulen. Work comes with certificate
