Theo van der Horst painting ‘Man with Binoculars and Woman’ 1988. This large-format painting, created in 1988 by the Arnhem-based painter Theo van der Horst, is titled ‘Man with Binoculars and Woman’. With broad, impasto brushstrokes, Theo manages to produce a comical yet simultaneously penetrating figurative work. Against the deep dark blue background, the figures leap off the canvas. The painting depicts a man with binoculars and a topless woman. What makes the work so intriguing are the questions it raises. What is the relationship between the man and the woman? Why is the woman topless while the man is wearing a blouse? What does the man hold in his left hand? Are the two on vacation, or are they perhaps spying on us as viewers? Theo van der Horst was a renowned Dutch painter, sculptor, and glass artist. He received numerous awards for his paintings, which are executed in a unique style that is both expressionistic and figurative. Theo has exhibited both domestically and internationally and is often mentioned in the same breath as great names such as Marius van Beek, Piet Slegers, and Klaas Gubbels. The painting has minor damage on the finger and under the eye of the male figure, but this is barely noticeable due to the use of white in the rest of the composition.
