Teak Sideboard, Clausen & Søn, Denmark, 1960s
This sideboard by Clausen & Søn embodies the restrained elegance that defined Danish cabinetmaking during the 1960s. The long, low proportions are balanced by a finely detailed carcass that appears to float on slender, tapered legs, while the uninterrupted teak grain across the sliding doors lends the cabinet a calm architectural presence.
The layout is both practical and carefully considered. Four solid teak drawers occupy the centre of the cabinet, each constructed with finely executed dovetail joints and fitted with sculpted solid teak pulls. The upper drawer retains its original green felt lining for cutlery or delicate objects. Sliding doors at either end reveal spacious storage compartments with adjustable shelves, allowing the interior to be adapted to a variety of uses. The recessed solid teak door pulls and mitred front edges reinforce the cabinet's clean, understated appearance without interrupting the continuous grain of the veneer.
Throughout the piece, the quality of craftsmanship is evident in the precise joinery, carefully selected teak veneer and subtle detailing. The richly figured top displays warm colour variation and expressive grain, while the sculpted drawer pulls provide a tactile contrast to the otherwise restrained design. The combination of refined proportions and generous storage makes the sideboard equally suited to use as a dining room credenza, media cabinet or statement storage piece.
The sideboard has been carefully cleaned, fully inspected and treated with a high-quality furniture oil, allowing the teak to regain its depth and warmth while preserving its natural character. It remains in excellent vintage condition with only light signs of age and use consistent with its history.
