Tapio Wirkkala for Rosenthal Studio Line — Duo of Black Porcelaine Noire Sculptural Objects (Germany, 1960s)
A rare and exquisitely balanced pairing from Tapio Wirkkala’s legendary collaboration with Rosenthal Studio Line: the Porcelaine Noire vase Model 7156 and the matching sculptural ashtray/object.
Together, they form a monochrome dialogue of mass and void, shine and shadow—two autonomous works that amplify each other when displayed as a set.
Executed in Rosenthal’s technically ambitious Porcelaine Noire, these pieces demonstrate the sculptural intelligence, precision, and material poetry that define Wirkkala’s finest work in porcelain. Few designers have explored the expressive potential of black ceramics with such restraint and authority.
1. Vase — Model 7156 (Height 23 cm)
A museum-level example of Wirkkala’s sculptural minimalism.
The vase is defined by a dramatic interplay of surfaces: the spherical lower body is cloaked in a deep, liquid-gloss black that absorbs and bends light, while the elongated neck transitions into a meticulously engraved matte surface. The extremely fine concentric striations—reminiscent of vinyl grooves—create an optical shimmer and a tactile vibration.
This controlled duality is quintessential Wirkkala: glossy weight vs. matte levity, reflection vs. absorption, organic curvature vs. engineered precision. The result is a vessel that feels simultaneously modern and archaic—a piece that could stand in a design gallery or an archaeological display.

2. Sculptural Ashtray / Object (Height 4.5 cm, Ø 14 cm)
Originally conceived as an ashtray, this object today is best understood as a small porcelain sculpture—an example of Wirkkala’s fascination with elemental geometry.
The form is composed of two parts:
• a flattened glossy black porcelain sphere, and
• a removable matte-black disc engraved with fine concentric rings.
When assembled, the piece becomes a monolithic, almost enigmatic object—its presence more sculptural than functional. Light glides across the dome-like body while the matte disc remains cool and silent, creating a tension typical of Wirkkala’s works across glass, metal, and porcelain.
