The Tap Water Carafe (surface water variant) with a diameter of 10cm and a height of 22cm is new and unused.
The Tap Water Carafe is a traditionally crafted water carafe intended to promote the use of tap water.
Dutch tap water is top-quality drinking water and is 2,000 times cheaper than bottled water. Even more importantly: it requires no environmentally polluting plastic bottles or transport.
The Tap Water Carafe can cool water without the need for a refrigerator. The shapes of the carafes are inspired by the origin of Dutch tap water, and the stopper of the carafe clearly points to the place where the contents are drawn: from the tap, of course!
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Because the ceramic of the Tap Water Carafe is not completely watertight, a small portion of the water content filters through the pores of the clay and evaporates as soon as it comes into contact with the outside environment. The evaporation process (the transition from liquid to gas) absorbs heat, thereby cooling the carafe and its contents. This fascinating, centuries-old process was formerly used extensively (particularly in the Middle East) to keep water cool.
Naturally, this does not apply to the glass version.
Please note: the carafe will leak water through the bottom, which is normal and part of the natural evaporation process. Do not place the water carafe on a surface that is not resistant to water stains. Use a coaster, for example.
DESIGNOR
The Tap Water Carafe was designed by Lotte de Raadt. Lotte has a studio and ceramics workshop in Eindhoven, where she designs and produces her own products. In doing so, she aims to raise public awareness of issues surrounding water usage.
With her traditionally crafted Tap Water Carafe, Lotte wants to promote the use of tap water. She originally designed the carafe as her graduation project in 2010, but the theme remains relevant today. The shapes of the carafes are inspired by the origins of Dutch tap water. The tall bottle with a long neck refers to water from deep underground. The low, voluminous bottle is the ideal shape for collecting surface water. The third can be filled with dune water.
