The term Art Deco was coined in the 1960s to refer to the art that emerged during the interwar period. It was a style that developed in all facets of design and reached its peak at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris (1925). Distinguished by its use of straight lines and geometric volumes, Art Deco is a style that emerged from a combination of different trends. Some of the major influences on Art Deco include avant-garde art, mechanization, and archaeological discoveries in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. It differs from other artistic periods in that it is a purely decorative style, in which artists focused on creating attractive and balanced pieces that reflected the society of the time.
It features the company's stamp on the base, which reads “modèle déposé, lampe de travail, MAZDA, France” (Registered/Patented Design, Work Lamp, MAZDA, France).
MAZDA was one of the great pioneers in the history of electric lighting in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. The name comes from Ahura Mazda, the Zoroastrian deity of light. At the beginning of the 20th century, the term was adopted as a trademark for high-quality incandescent light bulbs. In France, the brand was linked to the Compagnie des Lampes group, one of the country's leading light bulb manufacturers. Founded in the late 19th century, Compagnie des Lampes became a major player in the electrification of France. It marketed its products under the MAZDA brand, particularly during the 1910s and 1920s.
During the 1920s and 1930s, MAZDA actively participated in the modernization of urban and domestic lighting in France. Advertisements from that era showcased an Art Deco aesthetic and associated the brand with modernity, progress, and comfort.
After World War II, the lighting sector was restructured. The MAZDA brand was eventually integrated into the group that would later become Thomson-CSF (the predecessor of the current Thales Group). Over time, the MAZDA name faded away as an independent brand, though it left a significant mark on French industrial history.
