Abstract oil painting from the 60’s. It is by listed Swedish painter Lois Zelig. Oil painting on cardboard. Signed in the lower right part of the painting and on the reverse by the artist. The frame has seals from exhibitions in Paris and New York.
Vasile (Louis) Zelig 1922-1993
Vasile (Louis) Zelig was born on September 18, 1922 in Satu Mare, Romania. He was a Romanian-Swedish artist and designer. Zelig studied at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in Budapest. During World War II, Zelig was imprisoned in Auschwitz, Buchenwald and Belsen. In 1945 he emigrated to Sweden and studied at the Skåne Painting School (Skånska Målarskolan) in Malmö. In 1949 he married Gunnel Mattsson.
Zelig’s works were widely exhibited all over Sweden (1948 to 1967) as well as Los Angeles (1959), New York (1959), Paris (1960), Portugal (1960), Palma (1962) and Málaga (1963) . Examples of Zelig’s work can be found in the Trelleborgs Museum and institutions in Romania. The Hotel Värnamo City has a fresco "The Memory of Belsen" (1955).
Vasile Zelig died in 1993 at the age of 70.
