An exceptional sunburst mirror in Italian Murano glass, dating from the mid-20th century, in amber. Its circular design features alternating radially arranged pieces of amber glass with a rectilinear profile and other high-relief pieces of translucent glass with a fleur-de-lis pattern. All pieces are finished with classic rosettes that frame and embellish the mounting points. These finials are part of the historical tradition of Murano glassmaking and, in a way, evoke the magnificent Venetian mirrors that adorned the palaces of the 18th and 19th centuries. This visual interplay, which merges contemporary and traditional designs, results in a mirror with a striking aesthetic: original, playful, and unique. Murano glass originated with artisans who fled Constantinople and settled in the Venice area, where their art achieved great social prominence in the 10th century. However, by the end of the 13th century, fires in the wooden factories were frequent, so the authorities ordered the glassmakers to relocate to the nearby island of Murano to prevent potential fires from affecting the rest of the city. For centuries, the art of glassmaking has been carefully preserved.
