Stunning “Michiyuki” Kokeshi by Masae Fujikawa. Masae Fujikawa (1942–2015) was a prominent Japanese kokeshi-shi (kokeshi artist) from Gunma Prefecture. He is widely recognized as one of the early masters of the Sōsaku (creative) Kokeshi movement. Fujikawa was born in Gunma Prefecture and began making Kokeshi dolls at the age of 17 (in 1959). He apprenticed with the renowned master Ishida Kanji. In 1991, he founded the Fujikawa Craft Corporation, a family business that his brothers Kazumi and Eiichi later joined. Recognition: During his lifetime, he won numerous prestigious awards. His greatest achievement was winning the Prime Minister’s Award twice (in 1996 and 2002), the highest artistic honor in the Kokeshi world. Literally translated, Michiyuki means "to walk a path" or "to go on a journey" (michi means road/street, and yuki means to go). In the context of Kokeshi dolls, Michiyuki symbolizes finding the right path in life. The doll is often given as a gift as a personal guide or protector who helps the recipient walk a life path full of happiness, contentment, and balance. A Michiyuki is also a traditional Japanese overcoat that women wear over their kimono. The height is 25 cm; please view the photos for the condition. NB: The Kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, or cracks present to a greater or lesser extent.
