Tends to the design of the architect J.J.P. Oud.
Although J.J.P. Oud began his career building houses for family members in Purmerend, he quickly grew into an architect with an international reputation. Especially in Germany, his fame rises to great heights in the 1920s. This is mainly due to his work in the service of the municipality of Rotterdam between 1918 and 1933. Oud then designed public housing, including the housing blocks in Spangen and the Kiefhoek. These early designs are characterized by simple forms, the omission of ornamentation and references to the past, and an interest in industrial building techniques. Later Oud returned to more traditional building materials and did use ornaments again, as in the BIM/Shell office building in The Hague. This change brought him much criticism from advocates of modernism.
Oud sometimes associated himself with movements for short periods, including De Stijl, Nieuwe Bouwen and the international CIAM movement. He was also a member of the Rotterdam association Opbouw.
