“Still Life” by Roger Chapelain-Midy, 1940 – France. This stunning and powerful still life features a bouquet of lush flowers in a blue vase resting on a small side table. The background is dark, enhancing the luminosity and rich colors of the flowers, which display a wide range of colors (yellow, lilac, violet, and green). It displays the characteristic style of its genre: realistic and meticulous, which gradually gained ground in art history. The great artist Caravaggio (1573–1610) was one of the first artists to depict still lifes with a sense of purpose, but many others used them at some point in their careers. Originating in antiquity and very popular in Western art since the 17th century, the still life gives the artist more compositional freedom than other pictorial genres such as landscapes or portraits. Before 1700, still lifes often contained religious and allegorical symbolism related to the objects they depicted. Also known as still lifes, they often feature animals, flowers, fruits, foods, plants, and more. Their development falls within the context of a growing appreciation for painting and the explosion of interest in naturalism and the imitation of nature that began to develop at the end of the previous century. This work manifests its theatrical character and some other Baroque reminiscences in, for example, the black curtain in the background and the use of chiaroscuro. The rich floral composition emerges dramatically from the darkness, directly illuminated, creating an effect of depth, emphasizing the contrast of light and shadow, which adds a degree of dynamism to an otherwise static scene. It stands as a sublime and beautiful work, exquisite and of great pictorial quality. It does not seek solely visual delight, but rather invites the viewer to contemplate the passage of time, delving deeper into the fleeting beauty of nature. Roger Chapelain-Midy (1904, Paris – 1992) Roger Chapelain-Midy was a French artist whose training began at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Carmon workshop. He later continued his studies at the Académie de Montparnasse. In 1927, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris and, in 1929, at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon des Tuileries. A free-spirited artist, Chapelain was also a brilliant designer and set designer, qualities that undoubtedly influence his pictorial work. It could be said that his projection was directed towards the formation of a Renaissance man, a period he deeply admired and on which his artistic creation is based. The 17th century, and especially the French artist Poussin (1594-1665), were also objects of admiration and study for the artist. An influential artist of his time, his style takes on a theatrical and highly aesthetic nuance due to his numerous artistic qualities. At a time when painting was gaining strength, he reflected a personal style, true to himself, starting from a classic, balanced, and measured scheme of volumes, and delving into a chromatic scale of great luminous and symbolic impact. He flirts with surrealism and symbolism, although he stands out for his still lifes and landscapes. His works are found in numerous private and public collections.
