A beautiful painting (40x60 cm) by the Dutch painter J.C.W. Cossaar (1876-1966) depicting part of the interior of the St. Anne Chapel of St. Peter's Church in Leuven, Belgium.
The stained-glass windows and the rest of the interior are thickly painted. The vaults create a beautiful sense of depth.
The original frame deserves some attention, but the painting would also look great in a gilded Baroque frame.
The canvas is in excellent condition, with no paint loss or crackle, and measures 40x60 cm.
Starting as a scenic painter, he developed into a versatile artist. Cossaar is best known in the Netherlands for his church interiors and exteriors. He painted the great churches of France, Italy, and England.
In 1909, he settled in The Hague. In the 1920s and 1930s, there was a period of more mystical work. Angels, depictions of mystical experiences, and biblical scenes were frequent subjects during this period.
He studied at the Royal Academy in London, among other institutions. He received a grant from the Willink van Collen Fund in 1901 and 1902. He was a member of Pulchri Studio and the Haagsche Kunstkring in The Hague, and Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. His work can be found in collections including the Drents Museum in Assen, the Kelvin Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Centraal Museum in Utrecht.
