The Lord appeared at the oak of Mamre. Abraham lifted his eyes and saw three men. He ran from the entrance of the tent to meet them.
Genesis, Chapter 18
Christian tradition sees the appearance of the three figures to Abraham as a veiled announcement of the Holy Trinity. Andrei Rublev, by omitting the figures of Abraham and Sarah, leads us directly to the mystery of the one God in three persons.
The icon depicts the Trinity in its movement of love, the source of salvation for all humanity. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit meditate on the Incarnation of the Word, already symbolized by the cup.
In their hands they hold the scepter of kingship, a sign of one power, one will, one eternal origin that all three persons share.
