An exceptional small gueridon or side table of Chinese origin, made of ebonized and carved wood, with an inlaid marble top, circa 1900, Qing Dynasty. It can also be used as a stand or pedestal for potted plants or other important pieces.
An example of elegant Chinese decorative furniture from the Qing Dynasty, highly prized both in China and in exports to the West. It rests on five slender, cabriole-style curved legs that terminate in delicate, curled feet. They are joined by a lower openwork framework. At the top, just below the tabletop, connecting the legs, are intricate openwork panels with hand-carved plant motifs. This type of openwork carving is characteristic of Chinese furniture. The reddish marble with light veining is a striking feature.
The Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) was the last imperial dynasty of China, ruled by the Manchus, an ethnic group originating in northeastern China. This dynasty played a pivotal role in Chinese history, marking a period of significant territorial expansion, cultural exchange, and also internal and external challenges that ultimately led to the end of the imperial system.
