An authentic mid-19th-century piece that has retained all its original markings.
Circa 1850-1870 (Victorian Era), a very fine period piece that has survived over 150 years of history!
• The silversmith: Shaw & Fisher was a renowned manufacturer located on Norfolk Place in Sheffield, active primarily between 1835 and 1894.
• The style: This is a Victorian-style model, recognizable by its lobed (or "melon") shape, its ornate rocaille feet, and its insulated ebony handle to prevent burns.
A small, almost invisible repair at the top of the handle (photo 7).
• Material: The lion mark inside an oval cartouche, or accompanied by the full street name (Suffolk Road), confirms that it is indeed silver-plated metal, specifically "Britannia Metal" coated with a layer of silver by electrolysis, a specialty of this company. The silver plating is free of any "bleed" (the copper showing through).
• 1603: This is the manufacturer's model or catalog number.
• J: This is often a coded letter indicating the year of manufacture or the workshop foreman.
• 2: This number generally indicates the teapot's capacity in pints.
