Set of four vintage ‘SB02’ dining chairs, designed by Cees Braakman and produced by Pastoe in the 1950s. In the early 1950s, Braakman traveled to the United States to immerse himself in new design and production techniques. There, he was deeply impressed by the work of Charles and Ray Eames. That influence is clearly visible in this model and in virtually the entire birch series by Pastoe.
These chairs come from the first owners in Wormerveer, who purchased them new in the late 1950s along with several other pieces of Pastoe furniture. As was customary at the time, the set, along with the matching ‘TB23’ dining table, was located on the first floor!
The chairs were in a neglected state and have therefore been fully and professionally restored in our workshop, with respect for the original design and natural patina. Signs of use are visible here and there, which actually gives them character. The frames are made of laminated birch wood and remain very sturdy, even after seventy years. The backrests are veneered with beautiful teak, which has a warm, soft sheen.
The seats are upholstered at the original factory, something rarely seen with this model. Often, both the seat and back are upholstered, or neither is. That makes this set extra special. Due to their condition, the seats have been fitted with new foam and reupholstered with a fine fabric in a soft green-blue melange, which forms a beautiful contrast with the birch and teak wood.
The curved wood, the subtly floating seats, the interplay of wood types, and the unmistakably airy mid-century look make these chairs a true feast for the eyes. As far as we are concerned, the SB02 is one of the most beautiful designs from the Netherlands and undoubtedly a Dutch design icon. Pay special attention to the contrasting caps; details matter!
