Beautiful set of six vintage dining chairs, model ‘SB13’, designed by Cees Braakman and produced by Pastoe in the 1950s. As is often the case with Pastoe, the model name reveals exactly where the chair comes from: ‘SB’ stands for Stoel Berken (Birch Chair), followed by the model number, 13.
This set has been fully restored in our workshop with respect for the original design. The solid birch frames have been refinished with a protective satin-matte finish, carefully preserving the characteristic patina. The seats and backrests feature new, high-quality foam and have been reupholstered in a rich, deep navy blue wool fabric. The combination of the light birch wood and the dark fabric creates a beautiful contrast and adds a subtly playful character. A previous repair has remained subtly visible but has been carefully and discreetly concealed.
The SB13 is a beautiful example of Dutch modernism from the 1950s. During this period, the Goed Wonen Foundation advocated for honest, functional, and accessible furniture, stripped of superfluous ornamentation. Braakman translated that idea into a design that, thanks to the slender legs, light birch wood, and open construction, appears surprisingly airy. A chair in which design, functionality, and the use of materials are perfectly balanced.
Besides its refined design, the SB13 is above all a chair on which you sit comfortably, whether for an elaborate dinner or a quick cup of coffee. A timeless design that, more than seventy years later, still fits effortlessly into both modern and vintage interiors. Dutch design at its best.
