Beautiful set of four vintage dining chairs, produced by the Dutch furniture factory AwA in the 1960s. Reportedly, Louis van Teeffelen also designed for AwA at the time, suggesting this design could well be his, although there is no hard evidence to support this.
The set comes from the heirs of the first owners in Alkmaar. The chairs were stored there for over a year with the intention of restoring them ourselves, but due to a busy life, that plan ultimately fell by the wayside.
In our workshop, the chairs have been restored with care and respect for their original character. Because two of the original seats were missing, it was decided to provide all four chairs with new seat surfaces. This ensures they once again form a uniform and comfortable whole. The old foam has been completely replaced, and the seats have subsequently been reupholstered with a beautiful beige wool fabric: soft in appearance and with a lovely contrast against the dark frames.
And those frames… wow! You rarely see chairs with such refined lines and shapes. The design subtly embodies everything so typical of Van Teeffelen: organic, elegant, and thought out down to the last detail. Nothing is exaggerated, everything is in balance. Exactly the kind of design that doesn't need to scream to stand out. Moreover, the restoration brings the teak wood beautifully back to life, with a warm glow that enhances the character of the set.
A feast for the eyes and for sitting on. The wide backrest and new foam ensure delightful comfort. A subtle yet striking detail is the brass decorative spheres, which make the backrest appear to float visually. A beautiful example of Dutch design, with a clear nod to Scandinavian aesthetics.
