Designed by Philippe Starck, the King Costes is the larger four-legged evolution of his iconic Costes chair, originally conceived for the legendary Café Costes in Paris in 1984. While preserving the distinctive enveloping shell of the original design, the King Costes offers a more generous scale and exceptional comfort, making it one of Starck’s most successful dining chair designs.
Produced by Aleph for Driade in the 1990s, this set of six features beautifully moulded cherry wood shells, upholstered in supple light-coloured leather and supported by slender grey lacquered metal legs. The flowing curves of the wooden shell create an embracing silhouette, while the combination of warm natural materials and minimalist construction gives the chairs a timeless elegance.
Today, the King Costes is regarded as one of Philippe Starck’s most celebrated furniture designs and is represented in museum collections worldwide. Offered as a complete set of six, these chairs are an increasingly sought-after example of late twentieth-century Italian design, perfectly suited to both contemporary and classic interiors.
Condition
Very good condition with minor signs of wear consistent with age and careful use. The cherry wood retains a beautiful warm patina, the leather upholstery remains in very good condition, and the metal frames are well preserved.
