SIX FASEM S44 CHAIRS BY VEGNI — ITALY, 1980s
A striking set of six vintage S44 dining chairs, designed by Giancarlo Vegni and Gianfranco Gualtierotti for Fasem, Italy.
Defined by an unusually tall, gently curved backrest, the S44 turns a dining chair into an architectural silhouette. The slim black steel structure follows the body of the chair and branches elegantly behind the backrest, while the softly shaped seat introduces a more generous, comfortable counterpoint.
Both seat and back are lightly padded and fully upholstered in supple black full-grain leather. The restrained use of materials, visible edge stitching and precise metal framework reflect Fasem’s distinctive combination of Tuscan craftsmanship and technically driven Italian design.
Vegni is known for his clean lines, rounded forms and modular geometries. For the S44 he collaborated with Gianfranco Gualtierotti, whose technical background included research into polyurethane and the development of seating for aircraft. That combination of graphic clarity and structural knowledge is clearly visible in the chair’s slender yet supportive construction.
The complete set of six remains in exceptional, near-new vintage condition, with beautifully preserved leather and clean black frames. Each chair retains its original Fasem “Made in Italy” label.
