This set of 5 chairs, was designed for Fredericia Furniture AS in 1981 as part of the Classic Kings Furniture series, which has been designed since 1969, so named because Danish King Frederik IX received some of the models as gifts when he turned 70 in 1969. The Kings Furniture series has become a true classic of Danish design.The well-designed chairs with exposed joints are in good condition, consisting of a cherry wood frame, leather seats and a woven back with a graceful curve. Johnny Sørensen was born in Helsingør, the son of factory workers and appointed as an unskilled helper at the local shipbuilders, from where he progressed to the carpentry workshops, where he met Jørn Utzon, son of the famous Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the man behind the Sydney Opera House. He completed his apprenticeship in 1963 by producing a writing table in Rio rosewood. After graduating from the Copenhagen School of Art, he met his future partner Rud Thygesen, with whom he opened a company in 1966.Rud Thygesen and Johnny Sørensen went on to become renowned furniture designers, covered with prestigious awards such as the first prize in the Carpenters' Guild Furniture Competition, the Jubilee Award from the National Bank of Denmark and many others.Their work is on display at the Danish Design Museum in Copenhagen, the Design Museum in Oslo, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York..
