Original Tulip Armchairs by Eero Saarinen for Knoll International, designed in 1956.
These iconic swivel chairs are part of the legendary Pedestal Collection, which Saarinen developed for Knoll to eliminate the visual clutter of multiple legs under a table. The design is one of the most important examples of organic modernist design of the 20th century.
The armchairs consist of a one-piece seat shell made of white, glass-fiber-reinforced plastic, resting on a trumpet-shaped base made of white-painted aluminum.
The flowing transition from the seat shell to the armrests creates a harmonious, sculptural silhouette that conveys both comfort and formal lightness. The removable seat cushions are covered in a textured wool fabric in olive green – a typical color combination of early Knoll productions from the 1960s.
The Knoll International stamp is visible in the aluminum on the underside. These early versions are characterized by their heavy cast base, matte finish, and the handcrafted connection between the shell and base.
Condition: The chairs are in good, authentic original condition with age-related signs of wear. The surfaces show occasional minor scratches, slight discoloration, and localized chipping of the paint. The seat cushions are original, with some patina and partially flattened foam. The structure is stable, and the swivel mechanism is functional. Overall, a well-maintained, collectible set with a distinctive vintage appeal and significant design-historical significance.
