Product description
This set of four dining chairs originates from the Netherlands and dates from the interwar period, circa 1925-1935. The chairs belong to the tradition of the Hague School, a movement characterized by architectural restraint, functional clarity, and an emphasis on honest materials and construction. Crafted from solid oak and finished with a dark stain, the chairs exhibit a simple and rational design. The straight legs, low crossbeams, and ladder-back construction with horizontal rails emphasize the structural logic and visual balance. Ornamentation is deliberately absent; instead, the design relies on proportion, the presence of materials, and the inherent strength of the construction. This type of seating was characteristic of progressive Dutch interiors in the interwar period and was equally suited to institutional settings such as public buildings, schools, and public spaces. In terms of construction and aesthetics, the chairs closely resemble Dutch furniture production from the 1920s and early 1930s by manufacturers associated with the Hague School, including workshops and factories such as LOV and Pander & Zonen. Both were known for producing robust, well-proportioned oak, ranging from functional, institutional pieces to more refined models. The chairs clearly reflect the understated architectural language, choice of materials, and functional intent that characterized this period of Dutch furniture production in the interwar period. The seats were later reupholstered in cream-colored faux leather. The upholstery is neutral and understated, which complements the chairs' understated and functional character while simultaneously making them suitable for contemporary use. The chairs constitute a compelling and well-preserved example of Dutch modernist dining room furniture, notable for its architectural restraint and enduring visual appeal. The oak frames exhibit minor wear, patina, and signs of wear consistent with age and use. The seats have been reupholstered and are in excellent condition. They are sturdy and ready for immediate use. D x H x W: 48 x 86 x 45 cm Seat height: 47 cm
