Set of 4 CH33 Dining Chairs, Hans J. Wegner, Denmark, 1950s
Designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1957 and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn, the CH33 remains one of the designer’s most refined dining chair designs. Characterised by its softly sculpted silhouette and organic proportions, the chair combines visual lightness with remarkable structural integrity. Wegner’s understanding of cabinetmaking is evident throughout, with every element carefully shaped to create a balanced and harmonious composition.
This set is crafted in solid teak, displaying a warm, even colour and finely figured grain throughout the frames. The gently curved backrests taper elegantly towards each end, while the subtly angled rear uprights and rounded stretchers contribute to the chair’s restrained yet highly sculptural appearance. Small circular teak plugs on the backrests highlight the traditional joinery, reflecting the honesty of Danish craftsmanship rather than concealing it.
The generously proportioned seats have been professionally reupholstered in black Skai, providing a crisp contrast with the teak while remaining sympathetic to the chair’s original design language. The renewed upholstery offers excellent comfort and makes the chairs well suited for everyday use.
All four chairs retain their original Carl Hansen & Søn manufacturer’s stamp together with the Danish Furnituremakers’ Control medallion, confirming their authenticity. The set has been carefully cleaned, fully inspected and the teak has been treated with a high-quality furniture oil, enhancing the depth of the wood while preserving its natural character.
