Special set of 3 original Asko Koivutaru dining/armchairs, designed by Finnish designer Esko Pajamies.
These chairs initially caught my eye due to their unique, almost architectural construction. The curved reddish-brown wooden frame extends from the armrests to the characteristic sled legs, while the seat and back are suspended between the frame, as it were. A beautiful example of Finnish modernism from the 60s/70s.
The chairs feature the original brown canvas/textile upholstery, combined with richly tufted brown cushions. It is precisely this version that is encountered considerably less often than the well-known leather Koivutaru versions.
Authenticity
The chairs feature original branded Asko stamps in the wood, including on the underside of the seat and on the wooden floor support. The original construction, upholstery, and cushions have been preserved. Condition
Considering their age, the chairs are in beautiful, sturdy, and original condition, but naturally show signs of use appropriate for their age.
* The wooden frame has a few scratches and signs of use.
* The canvas shows discoloration and wear from the years.
* The original cushions are still present and feature the original zipper construction. * The chairs are structurally sound. The upholstery can be professionally reupholstered upon request.
For the true vintage enthusiast, it is particularly special that the original upholstery is still present. I have therefore deliberately chosen not to replace it myself.
About the Koivutaru
The Koivutaru series by Esko Pajamies is recognizable by the combination of curved wood, an airy construction, and loose, comfortable cushions. The design beautifully demonstrates how Finnish design of this period focused not only on form but also on construction and comfort. The Koivutaru has become particularly well-known for its armchairs and matching lounge versions. A complete set of three armchairs in this original brown finish is a special piece for lovers of Finnish and Scandinavian vintage design. A beautiful set for a vintage, mid-century, or Scandinavian interior, but also stunning as standalone statement chairs at a dining table, desk, or in a reading nook.
