This furniture ensemble is an iconic dining room set design by Italian architects and designers Afra and Tobia Scarpa from 1973, consisting of six so-called "Monk" chairs and a matching, extendable dining table.
The series was designed for the renowned Italian manufacturer Molteni and is now considered a classic of Italian modernism.
The chairs are characterized by a radically reduced, yet striking design language. The construction consists of a solid wooden frame made of beech with a strong rectangular cross-section. The seat and backrest surfaces are made of tightly stretched, black core leather, which is attached to the side of the frame with visible screw connections. The characteristic tension in the leather ensures ergonomic seating comfort without additional upholstery.
The "flat" lines and the slightly outward-set legs give the chairs a sculptural effect that nevertheless remains restrained and functional. The visible screw connections are not a necessary technical detail, but deliberately designed elements that emphasize the industrial character of the design.
The matching table is made of solid wood and was designed to match the chairs exactly in terms of both form and material. The legs are positioned on the outside at the corners of the table, which not only creates plenty of legroom, but also supports the clear geometry of the design. The table top has a central joint that allows the furniture to be extended by means of a synchronized extension mechanism.
The extension is achieved by means of two shelves, which are mounted underneath the table top. The wood grain is finely structured throughout, made from solid beech wood with a warm-toned lacquer finish.
Dimensions:

The condition of the set can be described as very good. The leather surfaces of the chairs show minimal, age-appropriate creases and slight wear to the sheen, but no cracks, discoloration or damage, only light scratches. The wooden frames of both types of furniture are stable and visually well preserved, with only very minor signs of use such as small scratches or pressure marks on the lower parts of the legs. The pull-out mechanism of the table appears to be functional and complete. Overall, this is a well-maintained, fully functional ensemble with clearly documented design origins and high design quality.
