Serge Poliakoff, born on January 8, 1900 in Moscow, Russia, was an important figure in 20th century abstract art. After moving to Paris in 1923 and a brief career as a cabaret artist, he found his vocation in painting. From 1935, he increasingly turned to abstraction, using color without representational references. Poliakoff developed a unique form of abstract painting in which he juxtaposed color fields. In the 1940s, he worked primarily with shades of grey and brown, before expanding his palette from 1950 to include strong, high-contrast colors. His later works are characterized by a reduction of colour intensity to earthy tones and a tendency towards monochrome compositions. This development reflects his artistic maturity and his striving for depth of expression. Serge Poliakoff's works are known for their powerful abstraction and subtle mastery of color. He died on October 12, 1969 in Paris, France, leaving behind a significant artistic legacy in modern art history.
