Sealed Silence is a bas-relief in which a human face appears trapped beneath a layer of cracked and weathered material. A zipper runs across the jaw and seems to literally seal off part of the face, creating a sense of tension, restriction, and hidden emotion.
The relief is constructed from plaster on a wooden support and finished with crackle paste. The many cracks and the fraying, fibrous structures around the neck and along the edges reinforce the feeling that the surface is slowly falling apart. The contrast between the recognizable human form and the rough, damaged skin gives the work a vulnerable and almost ephemeral appearance.
The face seems simultaneously present and hidden. As if something is trying to break through from within, while the surface is closing itself off further and further.
