Stunning large kokeshi by Kisaku. The kokeshi dolls by the Japanese craftsman Kisaku (喜作) are known for their elegant, often minimalist forms and refined woodworking. Kisaku primarily worked in the Sosaku style (creative style), meaning he stepped outside strict traditional rules to create unique, artistic objects that are highly sought after by collectors today. Often belonging to the Gumma tradition (hence the term "Gumma Kokeshi"), characterized by a rounded torso and often subtle engravings or paintings of natural elements such as leaves. The dolls are usually handmade from cherry wood or dogwood and are signed by the master himself, often on the underside or on the back. Although originally children's toys, they are now valued as art objects and good luck charms for interior decoration. The doll has the classic, stylized form of a Kokeshi, consisting of a round, smoothly finished head and a sturdy, slightly pear-shaped body. The face is sober and serene, designed with only a few simple lines for the eyes, which enhances the doll's calm appearance. She has a striking, deep black lacquered hairstyle that encloses the head like a helmet, with clean lines characteristic of modern or artistic Kokeshi designs. The body is painted like a kimono in a deep, warm reddish-brown hue. The design is decorated with stylized floral motifs in a gold/beige color, resembling chrysanthemums or similar flowers. The lines of the kimono are subtly accentuated by thin, dark green lines. The doll has an elegant, matte appearance that combines the natural texture of the wood with refined painting. The height is 23 cm; please view the photos for the condition. NB: Kokeshi dolls are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and cracks present to a greater or lesser extent.
