Royal Plateel Zuid-Holland “Lotea” Hand-Painted Lidded Vase
Gouda, The Netherlands, circa 1920s–1930s
A striking hand-painted lidded vase by Royal Plateel Zuid-Holland of Gouda, one of the most celebrated names in Dutch art pottery. Executed in the Lotea décor, as indicated by the inscription on the underside, the piece features a richly stylised floral composition in yellow, white, turquoise, ochre, olive green, and deep black.
The decoration is particularly expressive, combining large flowers, scrolling leaves, geometric accents, and ornamental borders in a bold yet harmonious Art Deco design. The dark ground gives the colours remarkable depth, while the elegant covered form enhances the vase’s sculptural presence.
The piece was made and decorated by hand, giving it the individual character typical of authentic Gouda pottery. The underside bears the original hand-painted factory markings, including the décor name Lotea, the model number 2951, and the inscription Royal Plateel Zuid-Holland.
The vase remains in very good vintage condition, with only light signs of age and use consistent with its period.
With its impressive height of approximately 34 centimetres, it can be displayed as a standalone decorative object, used as a covered storage jar, or styled with dried branches and other decorative botanicals. Its bold colours and refined form allow it to fit beautifully into both classical and contemporary interiors.
Founded in 1898, Royal Plateel Zuid-Holland became one of the leading manufacturers of Dutch decorative ceramics. The factory achieved international recognition during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods for its distinctive hand-painted pottery, richly coloured glazes, and highly individual decorative patterns. Today, its finest pieces remain sought after by collectors and are admired for their craftsmanship, artistic quality, and unmistakable Gouda character.
