Shipboard Girl from 1965 is one of Roy Lichtenstein’s first and most iconic portraits featuring his infamous cartoon heroines.
In Shipboard Girl, Lichtenstein experiments with the fundamentals of the pointillist technique. The work’s abundantly colored Ben Day dots are held within defined contours that form the heroine’s face, the ocean, and the sky. Lichtenstein employs powerful and primary pigments, with vibrant yellow for the hair, bright red for the lips, and hard black for the outlines. The calculated pattern indicates tone and texture within an otherwise flat image plane. Ultimately, Lichtenstein relies on the viewer’s optical instincts to discern the painter’s brushstrokes amidst the perfected mechanical finishes.
