Rosenthal Studio-Linie Duo by Tapio Wirkkala — “PLUS” Series (Germany, 1960s)
A Sculptural Pair in Glossy Blue–Green and Blue–Red Porcelain
This refined duo from Tapio Wirkkala’s sought-after “PLUS” series for Rosenthal Studio-Linie showcases two elegant variations on his sculptural modular forms. Each vase plays with architectural balance: a tapered column rising into a wide flaring disc, grounded by the characteristic ribbed base that defines the series.
The taller vase (H 16 cm · Ø 15.5 cm) appears in a deep blue–green gradient — cool, calm, and quietly monumental. Its generous disc top reads almost like a lacquered plateau, the form expanding outward with rhythmic precision.
The smaller vase (H 13 cm · Ø 13.5 cm) introduces a more rounded profile: a blue neck atop a red spherical body, creating an evocative, almost totemic silhouette. This version offers a softer, more tactile counterpoint to the taller piece.
Note: This vase has small, age-appropriate surface scratches visible in the photos.
Together, the pair forms a subtle but striking chromatic dialogue — green and blue versus red and blue, columnar versus globular — all united by Wirkkala’s disciplined sculptural language.
About the Designer — Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985)
A leading figure of Scandinavian modernism, Wirkkala brought sculptural clarity and elemental precision to every material he touched — glass, wood, silver, and porcelain. His long collaboration with Rosenthal Studio-Linie in Germany opened a new chapter in postwar design, merging Nordic sensibility with Bavarian craftsmanship.
The PLUS series exemplifies his architectural approach: modular forms, mathematical rhythm, and an understated modernism that feels both futuristic and timeless.
His work is held in major museums worldwide, including MoMA, the V&A, and the Stedelijk.
