Red–Blue Rosenthal Studio-Linie Duo by Tapio Wirkkala — “PLUS” Series (Germany, 1960s)
A Bold Sculptural Pair in High-Gloss Porcelain
This striking duo from Tapio Wirkkala’s celebrated “PLUS” series for Rosenthal Studio-Linie presents one of the most dramatic colour dialogues of the line: deep midnight blue and vibrant lacquer red. Each vase is a perfectly balanced study in Wirkkala’s architectural vocabulary—an elegant vertical column rising into a broad, flaring disc, grounded by a ribbed pedestal.
Both vases share identical proportions yet create tension through colour inversion:
the red vase glows with a saturated, enamel-like warmth, anchored by a cool blue ribbed base;
the blue vase reads calm and nocturnal, lifted visually by a red pedestal that functions like a chromatic counter-beat.
Together they form a sculptural duet of opposites—warm and cool, light and depth, vertical lift and horizontal spread. The pair embodies precisely what makes Wirkkala’s porcelain so collectible: pure geometry, bold chromatics, and an almost musical balance of forms.
About the Designer — Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985)
One of the most influential designers of the 20th century, Wirkkala helped define Scandinavian modernism. Trained as a sculptor, he brought a deep sensitivity to proportion, material, and silent form. His collaborations with Rosenthal beginning in the 1950s allowed him to explore porcelain as an architectural medium.
Under Rosenthal’s Studio-Linie, Wirkkala created works that feel simultaneously industrial and organic—precise yet poetic. The PLUS series is a perfect example: modular, balanced, mathematically clear, yet irresistibly tactile.
His works reside in the MoMA, V&A, Stedelijk, Cooper Hewitt, and numerous European design museums.
