Rosenthal Studio-Linie — Tapio Wirkkala “PLUS” Vase & Matching Candleholder
Germany · c. 1970s · Glossy Porcelain
A Sculptural Modernist Ensemble in Colour
An elegant and increasingly collectible pairing from Tapio Wirkkala’s celebrated “PLUS” series for Rosenthal Studio-Linie:
* the iconic blue–green vase
* and a matching candleholder from the same series in contrasting colours
Together they demonstrate the modular logic and architectural rhythm that define Wirkkala’s Rosenthal work.
The Vase — Blue–Green
Height: 19.5 cm
Diameter: 15 cm
The vase embodies the essential PLUS architecture:
* a rising cylindrical column
* expanding into a wide, disc-like rim
* anchored by the characteristic ribbed base
The glossy glaze transitions from emerald green to deep blue, creating visual depth and weight. The ribbed lower section introduces horizontal tension against the vertical shaft — a refined interplay of structure and colour.
Sculptural enough to stand alone, yet conceived as part of a modular system.
The Matching Candleholder — Red & Blue
Height: approx. 12cm, smaller scale companion piece
Executed in contrasting red and blue tones, the candleholder mirrors the PLUS geometry in condensed form:
* flared disc top
* structured central column
* balanced, architectural base
Its proportions echo the vase while introducing chromatic contrast — a dialogue between cool and warm tones, height and compression, vessel and light.
Displayed together, the two objects reveal the series’ true intention: modular design as sculptural composition.
About the Designer
Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) was one of the central figures of Finnish modernism. His collaboration with Rosenthal Studio-Linie, beginning in the late 1950s, brought Nordic sculptural sensitivity into dialogue with German porcelain precision.
The PLUS series reflects Wirkkala’s fascination with:
* architectural repetition
* modular systems
* geometric clarity
* and the expressive power of saturated colour in porcelain
His works are held in major international museum collections including MoMA (New York), the V&A (London), and the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam).
