Crafted in matte porcelain with a light, silky surface, the plate features Portanier’s signature visual world: energetic cobalt blues, fiery reds, gold accents, turquoise, green, and abstract figurative gestures.

Gilbert Portanier (b. 1926, Cannes) trained in architecture and painting before joining the legendary ceramic center of Vallauris, where Picasso had earlier revived the craft. Portanier quickly became one of Europe’s most imaginative ceramic voices. His collaborations with Rosenthal in the 1970s–1980s — including Alta Mira, Le Midi, and Vallauris editions — brought his poetic, symbolic, and often humorous imagery to a global audience.His visual language blends gesture, abstraction, and storytelling, making every plate a miniature theatrical performance.
