Rosenthal Germany | “Flying Swans” Vase | Glossy Porcelain with Gold Detailing | c. 1951
An exceptional example of early postwar porcelain from the renowned Rosenthal manufactory, this vase—produced in 1951 at the Bahnhof Selb factory—embodies the refined optimism and technical finesse that defined the company’s transitional designs after WWII.
Measuring 25.5 cm tall and rendered in a serene, celadon-blue glaze, the vase is encircled by a flock of stylized flying swans, executed in white underglaze with hand-applied gilded details. The motif recalls Asian aesthetics—particularly Japanese Rinpa screen paintings—while remaining unmistakably German in its technical execution and form.
The foot and lip are both rimmed in gold, adding a subtle accent that highlights the piece’s formal balance. The model number (L5052) is lightly impressed on the base, alongside the green Rosenthal “Bahnhof Selb” backstamp and gold date mark “21”.
Pieces from this period—especially those with scenic or nature-inspired decoration—are increasingly sought after by collectors of fine mid-century porcelain, and this particular example is remarkable for both its condition and the elegance of its composition.
